Team Volunteer Requirements & Information
Volunteer Requirement
Each team is required to provide volunteers to help staff exchange stations:
12-Person Teams
4 Volunteers (6:00 am-10:00 pm) or 2 night-shift Volunteers (10 pm – 6 am)
6-Person Teams
2 Volunteers (6:00 am-10:00 pm) or 1 night-shift Volunteer (10 pm – 6 am)
Volunteers will serve as Exchange Volunteers during the race and may bring along additional volunteers to help with their exchange. If your team is unable to provide volunteers, you may instead pay the Volunteer Opt-Out Fee:
• $399 – 12-person teams
• $199 – 6-person teams
Paying half and providing half of the volunteers is also another option. This fee allows us to hire local organizations to staff exchange stations.
*Teams that do not provide volunteers or pay the opt-out fee will be disqualified.
Volunteer Responsibilities
Team volunteers serve as Exchange Volunteers at an assigned exchange station.
Responsibilities include:
- Set up exchange if needed
- Record runner times
- Assist runners during exchanges
- Ensure safety rules are followed
- Answer basic race questions
- Help the station run smoothly
- Take station down and send
Volunteers must remain at their assigned station for the full duration of their shift.
Register Your Volunteer
All volunteers must register online.

During registration, volunteers will:
- Select their exchange station
- Indicate the team they represent
- Sign the event waiver
- Choose their shirt size
Please provide an accurate email and phone number so race staff can send important updates.
Selecting an Exchange Station
Volunteers will choose their exchange station during registration. Exchange stations are first-come, first-served, so early registration will provide the best options.
Exchange stations correspond to leg numbers:
• Example: Station #1 is at the end of Leg #1
If you want extra volunteers to be part of an exchange station, such as children, friends, or a youth group, each person will need to register as a volunteer and sign the waiver. This also ensures they get a volunteer shirt. If you want to work near your other Volunteer Captains, please register accordingly.
Please note that each team’s Exchange Volunteers must be assigned to different exchange stations to ensure all stations are covered.

Mandatory Volunteer Orientation and Training
We will have a mandatory online training video for volunteers to watch on their own time (available sometime in May) to show how to set up and manage an exchange. We will also have an online Exchange Volunteer Orientation will be available before the event (date TBD) to help volunteers feel prepared and answer any questions they may have.
In addition, we will be available at the start line to answer additional questions and to pick up your volunteer packet. If you can’t make it, your team captain can pick up your packet and deliver it to you or we can drop it off at your exchange ahead of time.
Thursday – 4:30 – 9:00 PM
Rim Rock Patio – Torrey, Utah
Volunteers may:
- Pick up their packet at the start line
- Ask questions at check-in
- Request bag drop at their assigned exchange station

VOLUNTEER CONTEST
A fun and successful race starts with fresh and enthusiastic volunteers to rejuvenate hot and tired runners at every exchange! LET YOUR CREATIVITY SHINE THROUGH AT YOUR EXCHANGE with themes, costumes, music, mega phones, glow sticks, etc. Just have fun!! Runners will remember you and you will become part of a great memory for them.
Not only that, but every volunteer is automatically entered into the “Most Enthusiastic Volunteer” contest. The winner of the contest will be announced via the Top of Zion Facebook page after the race where each team will vote which station/exchange volunteer was their favorite. Winners get a cash prize mailed directly to you! So get your game on, be the awesome Volunteer our Top of Zion Warriors need and win!!! Each runner can vote three times via facebook or email (ellen@topofzion.com).
- Winners will be selected one week after the relay. Winners are based off the number of votes received via Facebook and email!
